A21 Toll Info

Toll Info

The toll is a fee payable commensurate with the number of kilometres travelled by the vehicles and their class, where the distance travelled is determined by passing through the entrance and exit stations of the infrastructure itself for closed systems or through the exit station alone for semi-closed systems.

It is therefore based on a unit tariff, per kilometre and per vehicle class, defined in the concession contract. The tariff is subject to updates on an annual basis and in all cases determined by the Granting Body.

Toll calculation and payment methods

Calculate Toll

The toll is the amount that is paid for use of the motorway infrastructure, as provided for by the Italian Highway Code and in accordance with the tariff regulation introduced by ART Resolution no. 119 of 28/09/2017. It is calculated by multiplying the number of kilometres travelled, including junctions, slip roads and free motorway stretches before and after the tollbooth, built and managed by the Concessionaire, by the relevant unit tariff, increased by the additional fee to be paid to ANAS pursuant to Article 19, paragraph 9-bis of Italian Decree Law 78/2009 converted by Italian Law 102/2009, as supplemented by Article 15(4) of Italian Decree Law 78/2010 converted by Italian Law 122/2010. VAT (22%) must be added to the amount thus obtained and rounded up or down to the nearest 10 euro cents. The unit tariff is commensurate with the characteristics of the motorway stretches (plain or mountainous) and vehicle class, which is defined by “axle-shape”.

Motorway tolls can be collected using “closed” or “semi-closed” collection systems.

  • Closed system: motorway sections for which toll collection takes place via exit stations with channelled lanes with equipment capable of detecting vehicles, correctly classifying them according to objective physical parameters and calculating the distance in kilometres relative to the distance travelled. The journey is determined by the passage of the vehicle from two detection points (entry and exit stations) of the infrastructure itself connected to the motorway by junctions and equipped with traffic channelling and barriers. At these stations, automatic detection and classification of the vehicle in transit takes place. The calculation of the toll when passing through the exit station is based on a unit tariff, per kilometre and per vehicle class, defined in the binding contract between the Concessionaire and the Grantor;
  • Semi-closed system: motorway sections for which toll collection takes place via toll collection stations with channelled lanes with equipment capable of detecting vehicles, correctly classifying them according to objective physical parameters and associating a length with the journey. The distance may be calculated in a manner corresponding to the distance travelled (in the case of a single route involving the same toll station) or assigned on a conventional basis, in the case of route alternatives involving the same toll station.

The toll can be paid in the following ways:

  • Cash at lanes with an operator and at those equipped with automated terminals;
  • Credit cards belonging to the Visa, MasterCard and American Express circuits, with no fees or PIN entry;
  • Debit cards belonging to the Fast Pay, Vpay and Maestro circuits, with no fees or PIN entry;
  • Viacard current account toll card
  • Viacard prepaid toll card (payment instrument being discontinued by the issuing company);
  • Dynamic electronic toll system on all lanes marked with yellow signs.

Tariff Classes

The motorway toll varies according to the vehicle class defined by axle-shape on the basis of physically measurable elements:

  • Shape: vehicle height measured at the front axle (for two-axle vehicles – classes A and B)
  • Number of axles: for vehicles or convoys with more than two axles (classes 3, 4, 5)

The unit tariff takes into account the characteristics of the motorway section, distinguishing between plain and mountain routes. The latter entail higher costs due to the presence of viaducts and tunnels, which affect construction, operation and maintenance costs.

Unit rates applied to users (€/Km)* valid from 1 January 2025:
